As Constantine prepared to battle for Rome, he looked in the sky and witnessed a symbol with the surrounding words in Latin, "In Hoc Signo Vinces" meaning "In This Sign Conquer." 

A dream the following night resulted in him having his soldiers put the symbol on their shields.

The result was Constantine winning the battle for Rome, leading to the conversion of the Roman empire to Christianity.
